Solar PV & Battery Storage — Lower Bills, Future-Ready
Solar panel and battery storage installations for homeowners and landlords. Reduce energy bills, contribute to EPC C 2030 compliance, and future-proof your property. Quality components, professional installation, full electrical capability under one roof.
Energy Bills Aren't Going Back Down
UK electricity prices remain among the highest in Europe. Solar panels with battery storage typically reduce a household’s grid electricity consumption by 60-80%. With Future Homes Standard requiring solar on new homes from 2026 and the Warm Homes Plan committing £15bn to upgrading existing homes, solar has become standard infrastructure for energy-conscious properties.
Solar PV Panels
Quality monocrystalline solar panels (typically 400-450W each). Sized to your roof, shading and consumption profile. 25-year performance warranty as standard.
Battery Storage
Store solar generated during the day for evening use. Typical 5-15kWh systems. Brands include Tesla Powerwall, GivEnergy, SolarEdge, Sungrow.
EV Charging Integration
Smart EV chargers integrate with solar — charge your EV from surplus solar for free. Particularly powerful when combined with battery and time-of-use tariffs.
EPC C 2030 Contribution
Solar PV typically adds 5-10 EPC points. For landlords, often the most cost-effective single measure to push a property from D to C — within the £10k cap.
Smart Home Integration
Energy monitoring apps, time-of-use tariff optimisation, smart hot water diverters, heat pump pairing. Modern systems do far more than just generate.
Full Electrical Capability
Strata is unusual in offering solar AND fuseboard upgrades AND EV charging AND rewiring under one roof. Often the same install combines several measures.
How Solar + Battery Pays Back
A typical 4kWp solar PV + 10kWh battery system on a south-facing roof in London generates 3,500-4,200 kWh per year. With self-consumption (using what you generate) optimised through battery storage and smart timing, most households offset 60-80% of their grid imports. Combined with Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) payments for surplus generation, the system typically pays back in 7-10 years and saves £8,000-£12,000+ over its 25-year lifespan.

From Quote to Generating in Weeks
Solar isn’t a same-day install — but it’s also nowhere near as complicated as it looks. Here’s how Strata handles it.
Roof Survey
Site visit (or aerial+software survey) to confirm roof orientation, shading, structural suitability and electrical supply arrangement.
System Design
Optimum panel layout, inverter sizing, battery sizing based on your consumption pattern. Detailed proposal with annual generation forecast.
Approvals
DNO (Distribution Network Operator) approval for grid connection. Building control notification. Scaffolding booked. Programme agreed.
Installation
Typical 1-3 day install. Roof works + inverter + battery + commissioning. Generation starts immediately. SEG registration follows.
Common Questions
Will solar panels really save me money?
Yes — if sized correctly. A typical 4kWp + 10kWh battery system in London saves £900-£1,400 per year on electricity bills. Over 25 years, that’s £20,000-£35,000 in savings (without inflation). Larger systems for higher consumers save more.
How much does a solar + battery system cost?
Typical pricing: £6,000-£8,000 for solar PV only (4kWp); £10,000-£15,000 for solar PV plus battery. Larger systems cost more, smaller systems less. Free no-obligation quotation following site survey.
Do I need planning permission?
Most domestic solar installations qualify under Permitted Development Rights — no planning permission needed. Listed buildings, conservation areas and certain Article 4 areas may have restrictions. We advise during the survey.
What about VAT — is it really 0%?
Yes. Until April 2027, the supply and installation of energy-saving materials (including solar PV and battery storage) is VAT-exempt at 0%. This represents a 5-20% saving versus paying full VAT after that date.
Will solar work on my roof?
Most UK roofs can support solar — south, east and west orientations all work. North-facing roofs are less productive but sometimes still viable for smaller systems. Heavy shading (large trees, buildings) may rule out specific areas. Our survey confirms suitability.
What happens with surplus electricity?
Surplus solar is either: (1) stored in your battery for later use; (2) exported to the grid for SEG payments; or (3) diverted to heating water (immersion divert) or charging an EV. Modern systems prioritise self-consumption first, then grid export.
How do I claim Smart Export Guarantee (SEG)?
SEG is paid by your electricity supplier for surplus exported. We handle the MCS certificate and registration process; you sign a SEG tariff with your chosen supplier (Octopus, EDF, OVO etc all run schemes). Typical export rate 5-15p per kWh.
Does a battery work in a power cut?
Standard solar+battery systems disconnect during a power cut for safety reasons. Off-grid or hybrid systems with backup capability can keep specific circuits running — but require additional equipment (around £1,000-£2,000 extra) and design changes. We can specify backup capability if needed.
