Q: Do I have to replace a plastic fuseboard?

Not automatically. A plastic consumer unit in good condition is usually a C3 (improvement recommended) on an EICR. It becomes a priority when there is no RCD protection, signs of heat damage, or the board is in an escape route and shows other defects. We advise property by property.

Q: How long does a consumer unit replacement take?

Most domestic changeovers take half a day to a day including testing and certification. Power is off for much of that time, so we agree a slot with the occupant.

Q: What certificate do I get?

An Electrical Installation Certificate for the new consumer unit and the associated Part P building control notification through our NICEIC registration, plus a schedule of test results for every circuit.

Modern Circuit Protection for Older London Homes

Rewirable fuses, single RCD boards and plastic enclosures were fine for the loads and standards of their day. They do not protect modern electronics, heat pumps or EV chargers well, and they are the most common reason a landlord's EICR comes back unsatisfactory. Strata replaces them with metal consumer units to BS 7671 (18th Edition), with individual RCBO protection per circuit and a surge protection device, then tests and certifies the whole installation.
